Plata Law Group LLC

The Plata Law Group LLC was formed by Michael Jay Plata in October 2018 to provide cost-effective legal services to the New Jersey business community.  The firm focuses on assisting businesses through all stages of the business life cycle and serves as outsourced in-house counsel for companies of all sizes.  In addition, the firm counsels non-profit businesses, which includes assisting them with achieving their tax-exempt status.  The firm seeks to prepare, educate, and ultimately empower current and future entrepreneurs and business owners to start, grow, expand, and transition their businesses with the law in mind.

Attorney Bio

Michael Jay Plata

Michael Jay Plata is the founder of the Plata Law Group.  His practice is focused on complex business and commercial litigation in federal and state courts, such as breach of contracts, business torts, and shareholder disputes.  He has directed litigation in matters as diverse as environmental law, employment law, Section 1983 litigation, franchise law, licensing disputes, restrictive covenants, and insurance coverage disputes for several public entities, non-profits, and business entities of all sizes.  As business counsel, Michael also has experience with human resource and regulatory compliance, corporate governance, cybersecurity, privacy, data protection, intellectual property, licensing, and mergers and acquisitions.  Prior to founding the Plata Law Group, Michael was a partner at an Am Law 200 law firm.


In the fall 2019, Michael was a Practitioner-in-Residence at Rutgers Law School with the Community and Transactional Lawyering Clinic where he taught and supervised students in their representation of not-for-profit corporations.  He is a former President of the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey ("HBA-NJ") and currently serves as the Treasurer of the New Jersey Hispanic Bar Foundation.  Michael is a Trustee for the Boys to Leaders Foundation, Inc. and the Rutgers Law School - Newark Alumni Association, and serves on the Amicus committee and New Jersey Lawyer Editorial Board Standing Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association.  He has been recognized as a “Top Lawyer for Bergen County” for commercial litigation, named a “Rising Star” in multiple editions of New Jersey “Super Lawyers,” received the 2016 Professional Lawyers of the Year Award from the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law for the HBA-NJ, received a Special Recognition Award at Rutgers Law School 2015 Minority Student Program Annual Banquet, received 2015 Good Scout Leadership Award from the Northern New Jersey Council, Boy Scouts of America, and named to “New Leaders of the Bar” in 2015 by New Jersey Law Journal.


Michael earned his undergraduate degree from Florida State University, magna cum laude, with high honors, and his law degree from Rutgers Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Rutgers Race and the Law Review. Upon graduating law school, Michael served as a law clerk to The Honorable Ariel A. Rodríguez, Judge, Appellate Division, Superior Court of New Jersey, and thereafter, The Honorable John E. Wallace, Jr., Associate Justice, Supreme Court of New Jersey.
